Dempsey to Hold Facebook Town Hall

WASHINGTON —

Want to know what the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff thinks of the military retirement proposal?

Are you curious about Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey’s viewpoint on combating the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant?

You can find out the answers to these and other questions during the chairman’s Facebook town hall on June 24 at 10 a.m. EST.

The general holds periodic chats with the military world at large via social media. His first was in December 2013.

The chairman said he likes the format because it gives him a snapshot of what people are concerned with around the military. Facebook town halls augment the chairman’s town halls or all-hands calls he holds when he travels.

Dempsey takes information from his staff, but he writes the answers to the questions himself.

The chairman is prepared to answer questions on everything, from proposals to changing the basic allowance for housing to how to deter Russia.

If past Facebook town halls are any indication, the chairman will also answer questions about Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, China and North Korea. Other questions could involve cyber hacking, preventing sexual assault and military professionalism.
