Mr. Lawrence J. Wark was appointed to the Senior Executive Service on 15 May 2016, and he assumed duties as the Vice Director, Manpower and Personnel, The Joint Staff. As the VDJ1, Mr. Wark serves as the deputy/alter-ego to the DJ1 and fully shares in assigned duties, responsibilities and program authorities as the principal advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Director of the Joint Staff on all matters pertaining to the J1 Enterprise. These duties include personnel readiness, military and civilian personnel policy, human capital management, manpower requirements and resourcing, as well as distributed operations across multiple locations.
Mr. Wark retired from the Army in 2014 after 27 years of commissioned service as an infantry officer and a human resources officer, culminating as the Executive Officer to the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs). He has served multiple enterprise-level assignments in both the Army Secretariat and the Army Staff working strategic human resource issues. He is a combat veteran of both the 82nd Airborne Division and the 101st Airborne Division. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medals as well as the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge and the Ranger Tab. Additionally, Mr. Wark received the Horatio Gates Gold Medal for Extraordinary Achievement as an HR professional.
Following his military service, Mr. Wark joined the Department of Veterans Affairs. As the Director, Veteran’s Employment Services Office, he was charged with leading the efforts to hire Veterans into the federal government.
Mr. Wark then rejoined the Army, serving in the Office of the Assistant Secretary (Manpower and Reserve Affairs) as the ADASA (Military Personnel and Quality of Life). He assumed his current duties from this position
Mr. Wark has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the United States Military Academy and holds Masters’ Degrees in Human Resource Management from Troy University and Strategic Studies from the Army War College. He is JPME II qualified and was in the pilot program of the Joint Planner’s Course at the Army Command and General Staff College.
