Major General McGee grew up in Atherton, California, and is a 1990 United States Military Academy at West Point graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He also holds a Master of Administration from Central Michigan University and is an alumnus of the Army’s Senior Fellows Program, where he studied at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.
McGee was commissioned as an Infantry Officer and has served in various leadership positions, from Platoon Leader to Division Commander. Operationally, he has spent most of his career in light infantry units with commands in the 82nd Airborne Division, 75th Ranger Regiment, and 101st Airborne Division. From 2002-2013, McGee has 57 months deployed in support of combat Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. His operational assignments as a General Officer include Deputy Commander of Sustainment for the 1st Cavalry Division, Deputy Commanding General (Operations) for Army Cyber Command, and most recently as Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division.
McGee’s staff assignments include Joint Special Operations Command, Joint Staff, and two tours on the Army Staff. His previous position on the Joint Staff was as the Deputy Executive Assistant to the 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen. McGee’s service on the Army Staff includes Director of the Talent Management Task Force and Executive Officer to the 38th Chief of Staff of the Army, General Raymond Odierno.
His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legions of Merit, and five Bronze Stars. He also wears the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Air Assault Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, and Ranger Tab.
McGee has three children and is married to the former Catherine Nied.
