Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Public Affairs

WASHINGTON-

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, Feb. 6-8 where he met with his counterpart Royal Thai Armed Forces General Tarnchaiyan Srisuwan, as well as Royal Thai government officials including the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Defense.

The senior leaders discussed opportunities to strengthen the alliance and interoperability between the two militaries in addition to other issues of mutual interest.

The U.S. and Thailand have been defense treaty allies since the signing of the Manila Pact in 1954, have enjoyed diplomatic relations for 185 years, and in 2018 celebrate 200 years of U.S.-Thai friendship since initial contact between the governments of the two countries.  The U.S. remains committed, as a long-time friend and ally, to supporting Thailand's leading role in advancing regional security and prosperity in Southeast Asia, ASEAN, and the Asia Pacific.
