My leadership library contains classic and contemporary works, which have shaped my perspectives on both leadership and how I approach my current position as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I view my role, and by extension, the Joint Staff’s role in three parts. We must “Understand, Integrate, and Advise” to provide timely, informed, and impactful options to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council.
How well we “Understand” influences our ability to effectively “Integrate” the Joint Force and knowledgeably “Advise” our national leaders and policymakers. Reading, and learning in general, is essential to understanding people, leadership, the military, and our unique moment in history. I offer this library as a guide to anyone who seeks to broaden their understanding whether for professional or personal reasons.
