Statement by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley on the passing of Hershel "Woody" Williams:
“Woody Williams hit the beach at Iwo Jima alongside thousands of other Marines in one of the bloodiest battles in American history. I am the son of an Iwo Jima veteran, and the sacrifice they made on that island is almost beyond description. Those men fought for each other, and they fought for us. We inherited the most precious gift of all: our liberty and our freedom. We will always honor them by continuing to protect the Constitution they fought for and defended with their lives. After a life of incredible service and sacrifice, may Cpl. Woody Williams now rest in peace.”
