WASHINGTON — Joint Staff Spokesperson Col. Dave Butler provided the following readout:
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley hosted Japan Chief of Staff, Joint Staff, Gen. Koji Yamazaki today for a bilateral meeting at the Pentagon.
This bilateral meeting followed a Trilateral Chiefs of Defense Conference with Gen. Milley, Gen. Yamazaki, and Chairman of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Seung-Kyum Kim.
Gen. Milley and Gen. Yamazaki discussed a wide range of Alliance and regional security issues and discussed measures to increase U.S. - Japan military interoperability. They condemned the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s recent destabilizing missile activity and underscored the importance of peace and stability in the region. The Chairman reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to the defense of Japan including the Senkaku Islands.
The U.S. - Japan Alliance remains the cornerstone of peace, security, and stability in the region facilitating a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
