February 28, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Joint Staff Spokesperson Navy Capt. Jereal Dorsey provided the following readout:

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., spoke with Chief of Defence of the Netherlands Gen. Onno Eichelsheim today by phone.

Gen. Brown and Gen. Eichelsheim discussed the security environment in Europe, including ongoing support for Ukraine. The two leaders also discussed continued attacks by the Houthis against commercial and naval vessels transiting a critical trade corridor through the Middle East. Those attacks have endangered the lives of international seafarers and the Yemeni people. Both the United States and the Netherlands aim to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea.

Finally, Gen. Eichelsheim and Gen. Brown exchanged views on security cooperation among U.S. and European partners to advance a shared vision for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Netherlands is a founding member of NATO, vital partner in coordinating security assistance for Ukraine, and steadfast U.S. ally around the world.
