WASHINGTON--Joint Staff Spokesperson Col. Patrick S. Ryder provided the following readout:
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. visited Madrid, Spain Oct. 1-2 to meet with officials there, to include Spain’s Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Fernando Alejandre Martinez. Discussions focused on items of mutual security interest.
During his visit, Gen. Dunford expressed his appreciation to Spanish officials for Spain's hosting of U.S. forces for more than 60 years at their naval base in Rota and airbase in Morón. He also thanked them for their ongoing support of Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq, Operation Resolute Support in Afghanistan and for their ongoing Patriot missile defense mission in Turkey. Spain's train and advise efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan have made a significant impact in building the capacity of Iraqi and Afghan security forces to defend their nations.
Spain is a vital NATO ally and shares a long-standing and strategic relationship with the United States.
