WASHINGTON--Joint Staff Spokesperson Col. Patrick S. Ryder provided the following readout:                               

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. met with his counterpart Royal Thai Armed Forces Chief of Defense Gen. Ponpipaat Benyasri yesterday.

Gen. Dunford congratulated Gen. Ponpipaat on his appointment as chief of defense and expressed his desire to continue building upon the strong alliance between the two nations. The two senior leaders also discussed opportunities to cooperate during Thailand's 2019 ASEAN Chairmanship, interoperability between the two militaries, as well as other issues of mutual interest.

The U.S. remains committed, as a long-time friend and ally, to supporting Thailand's leading role in advancing regional security and prosperity in Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific.
