Statement by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley on the passing of Former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter:
“On behalf of the Joint Force, our heartfelt condolences are with Stephanie and the entire family of former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. Secretary Carter was a true professional who was deeply committed to serving this nation.
Throughout his life, Secretary Carter served in many roles in academia and U.S. Government national security key leadership positions. The common thread through all these roles was his competence, compassion, integrity, and civility.
Secretary Carter understood service. He understood sacrifice. He understood how to build effective teams which was critical to the success of this nation. He was a man of incredible character, talent, and skill.
We are very fortunate that Secretary Carter led the Department of Defense. Secretary Carter tapped into the full potential of our men and women in uniform. He cared deeply for all our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines as well as their families. He walked with kings, served with heroes, and yet always kept the common touch.
The country lost a great patriot and all of us in uniform lost a leader, a friend, and a champion of selfless service to protect and defend our Constitution. May he rest in peace.”
