DOD Marks 70th Anniversary of the Chairmanship

This week marks the 70th anniversary of the swearing-in of Army Gen. Omar N. Bradley as the first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This followed the Aug. 10, 1949 signing of an amendment to the National Security Act by President Truman, which created the permanent position of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, unified the control of the Armed Forces under the secretary of defense, and renamed the National Military Establishment as the Department of Defense.

Acting Army Secretary Ryan D. McCarthy swore in Gen. James C. McConville as the 40th Army chief of staff during an Aug. 9 ceremony at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Virginia. McConville succeeds Army Gen. Mark A. Milley, who has been confirmed as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and will take office at the end of September.
